Why The Sea Has Never Let Me Go | Coastal Art by Sam Taylor

Why I keep returning to the coast, and how the feeling of the sea finds its way into my coastal paintings.

There are certain colours that seem to live somewhere deeper than memory.

For me, it has always been blue.

Not one particular blue, but all the shifting shades of the sea — pale morning skies, deep turquoise water and that soft haze where the horizon seems to disappear into the ocean.

As a child, I used to imagine escaping beneath the surface of the sea.

Underwater, everything became quiet. The noise disappeared. The world above felt far away, and there was only this endless expanse of blue around me.

It felt peaceful.

Free.

Perhaps that is why the sea has never really let me go.

The Places That Stay With Us

Even now, there is something about arriving at the coast that changes the pace of everything.

The air feels different. The light feels softer. Small details suddenly become impossible to ignore — sunlight moving across the water, white foam disappearing into wet sand, the changing colour of the sky as afternoon slips towards evening.

These are the moments I remember long after I have left.

I rarely remember a coastline because of a particular landmark. I remember how it made me feel.

Lighter. Calmer. More myself.

And it is that feeling that finds its way into my coastal paintings.

Painting More Than a Place

My paintings sometimes begin with somewhere real.

A photograph taken while travelling. A colour in the water. A particular moment when the light stopped me in my tracks.

But when I begin painting, the place itself often starts to disappear.

What remains is the feeling.

The vastness of the horizon. The warmth of sunlight. The quiet beneath the surface. That wonderful sense of freedom that comes from looking out towards something seemingly endless.

I am not really trying to recreate the sea exactly as it appeared.

I am trying to capture what it gave me.

Bringing the Coast Home

Perhaps that is also why we are drawn to sea-inspired art.

A painting can remind us of somewhere we love, somewhere we once felt completely free, or somewhere we dream of escaping to.

Sometimes we cannot even explain why a piece speaks to us. We simply know that it makes us feel something.

When one of my coastal paintings finds its way into someone’s home, I hope it becomes more than something beautiful on the wall.

I hope it offers a moment of calm.

A place for the eyes to rest.

A reminder of open skies, distant horizons and the feeling of standing at the edge of the sea.

Maybe that is what I have been painting all along.

Not one particular place.

But a feeling I have spent my whole life returning to.

Quiet. Space. Freedom.

And an endless expanse of blue.
