How Cornwall’s Coast, Colour and Light Inspire My Art
Wild coastlines, quiet coves, endless skies and the colours I always find myself returning to.
There are some places that stay with you long after you leave.
For me, Cornwall is one of them.
Maybe it’s the light, the colour of the water, or the feeling of space you get when the coastline opens up in front of you. Everything seems to slow down here.
I notice the smallest things — wildflowers along the cliff paths, weathered stone, flashes of turquoise between the rocks, deep Atlantic blue and the way the sky changes from one moment to the next.
I rarely come looking for a painting. I come looking for a feeling.
ST IVES
St Ives has a light all of its own.
Whitewashed buildings, harbour boats, sandy beaches and that wonderful blue appearing almost everywhere you turn. I love walking from the harbour towards Porthmeor, stopping whenever something catches my eye.
Sometimes it’s not the obvious view that stays with me, but a painted doorway, the faded colour of a fishing boat or sunlight hitting an old stone wall.
THE NORTH COAST
This is the Cornwall I’m most drawn to.
Big skies, dramatic cliffs and long stretches of Atlantic water.
Standing above the beach, watching the waves roll towards the shore, everything else seems to disappear for a moment.
It’s this sense of openness that often finds its way into my paintings — the horizon, the movement of the sea and that feeling of being able to breathe a little deeper.
QUIETER COVES
Some of my favourite moments happen away from the busier beaches.
A hidden path. A small curve of sand. Clear water below.
There is something about swimming in the sea that makes the world feel quieter. Perhaps that is why water appears in my work so often.
For me, it represents freedom, calm and escape.
THE COLOURS OF CORNWALL
Cornwall has a palette all of its own.
Chalky whites. Sand. Weathered stone. Sage greens. Deep navy. Bright turquoise. Rust and ochre in the cliffs.
I photograph these colours constantly.
Back in the studio, I don’t try to recreate the landscape exactly. The memory becomes looser. Colours shift. Horizons move.
What remains is how the place made me feel.
CORNWALL, TRANSLATED INTO PAINT
When I return home, Cornwall comes back with me in fragments.
A particular blue. The curve of a coastline. Light on water. The feeling of standing in front of something vast and open.
Those fragments slowly find their way onto the canvas.
Some places are beautiful to visit.
Others become part of you.
Cornwall is one of those places for me.
