Have you ever noticed how one piece of art can completely change the way a room feels?
We often think about sofas, wall colours, lighting and furniture when we’re creating a home, but artwork has just as much influence over the atmosphere of a space.
To show just how much difference it can make, I took one simple, neutral room and changed only one thing: the artwork.
Same sofa.
Same furniture.
Same light.
Same room.
But three completely different moods.
Soft: Calm, light and uplifting
Soft pinks, gentle turquoise and warm, hazy light give this room a completely different feel.
There’s something uplifting about a palette like this. It softens the harder edges of a space and brings in a sense of calm, warmth and lightness.
Where Light Rests feels gentle and optimistic — the kind of artwork that can make a room feel like somewhere to slow down.

Deep: Immersive, cocooning, considered
Now change the artwork to richer, deeper blues and the whole atmosphere shifts.
Whispers of the Deep gives the room more depth and presence. The darker tones make the space feel quieter, more immersive and cocooning.
Nothing else has changed, yet suddenly the room feels more intimate.
This is something I love about deeper artwork: it doesn’t necessarily make a room feel dark. Instead, it can create contrast, richness and a sense of stillness.

Energetic: Fresh, vibrant, full of movement and energy
Then comes In Motion.
Fresh turquoise, cobalt, lime green and flowing movement instantly bring more energy into the room.
The space feels brighter, more contemporary and more expressive.
This is a great example of how artwork can introduce colour without needing to redecorate an entire room. A neutral interior gives you the freedom to completely change its personality simply by changing what hangs on the wall.

Art Does More Than Fill a Wall
This is one of the reasons I’ve always believed artwork should be chosen for how it makes you feel, rather than simply because it matches the cushions.
The right piece can soften a room.
It can give it depth.
It can make a space feel lighter, calmer, more joyful or more alive.
And sometimes, it can make a room finally feel like you.
If you’re choosing artwork for your own home, think less about what “goes” and more about the atmosphere you want to create.
Do you want your room to feel soft and uplifting?
Deep and cocooning?
Fresh and energetic?
There’s no right answer — only the feeling you want to come home to.
Which mood feels most like you?
